A weather balloon carrying 9,000 packs of Belarusian cigarettes landed in Kaunas, Lithuania, disrupting Vilnius Airport operations.
On the night of May 12-13, 2026, a weather balloon landed in Kaunas, Lithuania, carrying 9,000 packs of Belarusian cigarettes. The event reportedly caused Vilnius Airport to temporarily suspend operations overnight, resulting in one flight being redirected and another cancelled. The cigarettes were attached to the weather balloon, which originated from Belarus, indicating use of aerial means for cigarette smuggling.
Confidence: High
The incident involves use of unorthodox aerial means (weather balloons) to conduct large-scale cigarette smuggling from Belarus into Lithuania, causing operational disruption at a major airport, which fits well as a hostile hybrid economic and logistical pressure tactic.
