Two abandoned vessels, a Chinese-owned Hong Kong-flagged product tanker named Golden Sapling and a Russia-flagged general cargo ship named Omskiy-107, were attacked in the Black Sea and subsequently washed ashore in Turkey. Golden Sapling was struck by a drone approximately 90 nautical miles from Sinop on August 26 while heading toward Novorossiysk, Russia. The 21 crew abandoned ship and were rescued by the Greek-flagged tanker Maran Pythia. The tanker showed extensive fire damage and was drifting empty before washing ashore near Alaçam, Samsun on August 30. The Omskiy-107, operating between Russia and Turkey, was badly damaged including a burnt-out bridge and washed ashore near Alacali Beach in Sile. The attacks are linked to the ongoing Ukrainian assault on shipping supporting Crimea and the Sea of Azov. The Turkish Foreign Ministry protested the attacks on commercial shipping and summoned the Ukrainian ambassador. Turkey had proposed a moratorium on attacks on shipping in the Black Sea and called for de-escalation.
