Summary

Two drones were spotted flying over a German military base in Mechernich, western Germany, at around 10:00 p.m. on Thursday. This event occurred just two days after a drone carrying explosives was found at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The German Armed Forces confirmed the sightings and deployed military police forces to the site. The German military said that the Euskirchen police department has opened an investigation. The incident heightened security concerns following last year's widespread mysterious drone flights over European Union airspace and the recent drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, which was linked to potential new security threats. Leipzig/Halle Airport serves as a major international freight hub and supports Ukrainian operations. The base at Mechernich is home to NATO's Strategic Airlift International Solution (SALIS) mission, which supports NATO nations with airlift capabilities. In 2024, a device set fire to a freight container at Leipzig/Halle Airport, suspected to be connected to Russian intelligence operations. Western officials blame Russia and its proxies for staging attacks and incidents across Europe since the invasion of Ukraine. The Russian Embassy in Germany called the Leipzig drone incident part of a 'new wave of anti-Russian hysteria in Germany.'

Classification

Confidence: Medium
