On January 11, 2024, Russian state and pro-Kremlin channels intensified disinformation campaigns leveraging ongoing German farmers' protests to question the costs of Western weapons deliveries to Ukraine. Former Russian President Dmitri Medvedev publicly claimed that halted agricultural subsidies and rising Ukraine war expenses could incite protests like the Maidan in Berlin. Pro-Russian Telegram channels propagated imagery comparing costs of Leopard and Marder tanks to saving German farms, asserting Ukraine is enriched at German citizens' expense. Analysts at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue outlined this as a recurring Kremlin tactic to undermine Western support for Ukraine by portraying aid as wasteful and feeding domestic dissatisfaction in Germany. Russian media also exaggerated economic hardships to bolster narratives of Western decline and Russian superiority. Additionally, false claims about F-16 jets being destroyed in Ukraine and western arms being ineffective or sold on black markets were circulated to further erode trust in Western military aid. The German government continues to support Ukraine financially and militarily despite budget constraints, highlighting the importance of countering these disinformation efforts. This propaganda aims both to weaken Western solidarity with Ukraine and to convince domestic Russian audiences of Russia's relative stability.
