A 2025 study reveals that AI chatbots widely used in Germany are spreading Russian propaganda, with Kremlin-linked Pravda network content present in 33% of chatbot responses.
On March 24, 2025, it was reported that AI-based chatbots, increasingly popular in Germany with 25% of people over 16 years using them, are inadvertently spreading Russian propaganda. A NewsGuard study found that all leading AI chatbots examined repeated Kremlin-affiliated Pravda network falsehoods in about 33% of cases. The Pravda network exploits SEO and automation to flood the internet with pro-Kremlin disinformation, integrating millions of articles into Western AI training and response data. This manipulation undermines public trust and exploits inherent chatbot weaknesses in assessing source credibility, posing a significant risk to democratic information ecosystems without sustained monitoring and collaboration. The study highlights concerns over long-term impact and difficulty countering fast-evolving disinformation tactics.
Confidence: High
The article explicitly describes Kremlin-linked disinformation network Pravda deliberately manipulating AI chatbot content to spread Russian propaganda, targeting German and Western users, constituting a hostile aggressor hybrid warfare act in cyberspace.

"description": "The article reports on a NewsGuard study published March 24, 2025, revealing that major AI chatbots commonly used in Germany rely on internet sources that include Kremlin-affiliated Pravda network propaganda. This network, based in Moscow, disseminates vast amounts of disinformation through over 150 websites disguised as independent local news outlets to flood search results and web crawlers with pro-Russian false content. Approximately 3.6 million Pravda articles in 2024 have been incorporated into AI models, resulting in 33% of chatbot answers repeating false claims from this network, such as fabricated stories about Ukrainian politics and staged videos targeting political figures. The study authors, McKenzie Sadeghi and Isis Blachez, explain the Pravda network deliberately targets AI data scraping techniques using SEO and high volume content to boost visibility and influence AI responses. The article notes that 25% of Germans over 16 already use chatbots and that increasing reliance on AI for search amplifies risks of disinformation. Researchers warn AI tools cannot reliably distinguish credible from unreliable sources, especially in languages or regions with weaker fact-checking infrastructure, leading to potential erosion of public trust and democratic values. The article also references earlier studies showing chatbots frequently present false or speculative information confidently. It concludes that combating this influence will require continuous human oversight, investments in reliable data, greater attention to non-English disinformation threats, and cross-industry cooperation.",
