Finnish startup Sensofusion develops affordable surveillance aircraft to detect and counter drones, combining a light aircraft with SIGINT and radar. Prototype flights set for early June 2026. Plans include satellite launch in 2027 for global signals intelligence.
Finnish defense technology company Sensofusion is developing a new affordable airborne intelligence and surveillance system based on the existing Atol Aurora light aircraft platform. The system will include signals intelligence equipment, radar, and an integrated counter-drone suite, enabling detection and location of drones at ranges and altitudes beyond ground-based sensors. The aircraft can operate manned or unmanned and benefits from general aviation status, allowing flexible use in normal airspace without restrictive permits. Two aircraft are in production at Sensofusion's Jämsä factory, with prototype test flights due within days of June 3, 2026. Sensofusion plans global market series production and estimates local job creation. The company also plans to launch its first satellite, Fennec-1, in autumn 2027 to extend detection capabilities to global coverage from space, with a second satellite planned.
Confidence: High
The article describes the development of indigenous homeland defense technology focusing on drone detection and surveillance to enhance situational awareness and counter unmanned threats, indicating defensive posture and capability enhancement rather than aggressor activity.
