Latvian company Ascent Lumina chosen for EU defence accelerator program to develop AI-based unmanned systems tech; at least ten Latvian companies involved in delivering 42 ASCOD infantry fighting vehicles to Latvian National Armed Forces by 2026 with 30% local industry involvement.
The Latvian company Ascent Lumina was selected as one of 20 companies to participate in the European Commission's Defence Innovation Programme (EUDIS) Business Accelerator. Ascent Lumina specializes in computer vision and visual control technologies for unmanned systems, including AI, machine vision, augmented reality and robotics software development. The Ministry of Defence supports this initiative to boost the European defence industry by helping startups develop innovative defense and dual-use technologies. Winners will participate in an eight-month acceleration program starting June 2025 in France, with a 65,000 euro development grant and opportunities for testing, validation, and cooperation with industry stakeholders. Separately, at least ten Latvian companies will be involved in delivery and assembly of 42 ASCOD infantry fighting vehicles ordered in January 2025 from Spain's GDELS, with a requirement for at least 30% local industrial involvement. These vehicles, costing 373 million euros, are to be delivered starting in 2026 and feature NATO-grade armor, automatic cannons, anti-tank and other weapons, with a crew of 3 and capacity for 6 soldiers.
Confidence: Medium
The article reports on defense industry development efforts and strategic investments in military technology and local industrial capacity for defense equipment delivery, all indicative of defense preparation rather than aggressor hostile actions.
