On 7 September 2024, a Shahed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) of military importance from the Russian Federation was found in the Rēzekne Municipality, Latvia. The UAV entered Latvian airspace illegally from Belarus and was carrying explosives. On 9 September 2024, the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Charge d’Affaires a.i. of the Russian Embassy to issue a categorical protest and requested a comprehensive explanation. The Russian representative confirmed he would inform the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia. Latvian authorities are conducting an in-depth investigation and have informed NATO, the EU, and other international partners via diplomatic channels.
