Summary

Western Finland Coast Guard warns of increased GPS signal jamming in the Archipelago Sea and Åland Sea area. The jamming signal originates from Russia aiming to protect critical ports recently targeted by Ukraine. The interference mainly occurs offshore and affects GPS positioning on vessels, particularly large ships, though smaller boats are less affected due to GPS device placement and landscape shielding. Coast Guard emphasizes the use of traditional paper nautical charts during interference and reports that shipping companies are generally prepared to navigate using radar and charts.

Classification

Confidence: Medium

The source identifies Russia as the origin of GPS jamming targeting critical maritime infrastructure, indicating hostile state hybrid warfare activity aimed at disrupting navigation and protecting key ports from Ukrainian attacks. This operational interference fits the hybrid warfare definition as a non-kinetic attack impacting infrastructure.
