On December 23, 2025, Estonia announced a €300 million deal to acquire the K239 Chunmoo long-range missile system, strengthening its active defense posture with missile ranges exceeding 300 km.
On December 23, 2025, Estonia announced the enhancement of its long-range strike capabilities by acquiring the K239 Chunmoo multiple-launch rocket system. This acquisition marks the third major capability in its shift from purely territorial defense to an active defense posture since 2022, complementing existing HIMARS and Israeli Blue Spear missile systems that enable strike ranges up to and beyond 300 km. The purchase deal, valued at approximately €300 million, includes six launchers and various missile types (CGR-080, CTM-MR, CTM-290), with Estonia becoming the first foreign operator of the CTM-MR variant. Hanwha Aerospace, the system's manufacturer, also supplies similar systems to Northern European and Baltic countries such as Norway, Latvia, and Lithuania, and has ongoing negotiations in the Middle East and Asia. The deal supports long-term defense readiness and strengthens the regional supply network. Other existing operators of the Chunmoo system include South Korea, UAE, Poland, and Saudi Arabia. Estonia's enhanced strike range now covers substantial portions of surrounding regions, further bolstering its deterrence capabilities.
Confidence: High
The event clearly describes Estonia's defensive military procurement of long-range missile systems, signaling an active defense posture upgrade. This is an allied defense preparation event without indication of hostile aggression, hence is_defense_prep_event is true and is_aggressor_event is false.
