Kremlin-run 'Matreshka' bot network spreads fake media to sow discord between Baltic states, EU, and Ukraine by promoting narratives of Baltic Russophobia and political conflicts.
The Kremlin-linked bot network 'Matreshka' has launched a disinformation campaign targeting divisions between the Baltic states and the rest of the European Union, as well as between the EU and Ukraine. The bots distribute fake videos and manipulated media on social networks like Twitter (X) and Bluesky, falsely depicting conflicts caused by alleged 'Russophobia obsession' among Baltic politicians. Fake covers of Western media outlets and fabricated quotes are also used to spread this narrative. Examples include disinformation involving Estonian MEPs Urmas Paet and Sven Mikser, and alleged criticism of Baltic politicians by former European External Action Service head Josep Borrell. The campaign aims to foment distrust and political discord within the EU and undermine support for Ukraine, exploiting real historical and political tensions such as the controversy over the naming of Ukrainian special operations units after UPA heroes and Polish-Estonian relations, while using false attributions and fabricated content.
Confidence: High
Confirmed use of coordinated bot network spreading fabricated media and false narratives targeting political unity of Baltic states and EU, fitting definitions of hostile hybrid disinformation operations.
