Two Poles and a Belarusian working for Russia have been detained for attacking Russian opposition activist Leonid Volkov in Vilnius. The attack was politically motivated and orchestrated by Russian interests.
Lithuanian and Polish law enforcement agencies arrested two Polish men on April 3, 2024, in Warsaw on suspicion of assaulting prominent Russian opposition activist Leonid Volkov with a hammer outside his home in Vilnius in March. A Belarusian national, working for Russia, has also been detained on suspicion of ordering the attack. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk acknowledged the arrests and praised cross-border cooperation. Lithuanian prosecutors indicated that the suspects were already known to Polish authorities. Investigations showed that the attackers traveled from Poland to Lithuania, carried out the attack, and returned to Poland. This case is regarded by Lithuanian State Security as a politically motivated act of political terrorism likely orchestrated by the Russian state to silence opposition figures abroad. Volkov thanked Lithuanian police for their diligent work. The suspects are to be handed over to Lithuania after legal proceedings in Poland conclude.
