Polish airspace was violated on the night of September 4, 2025, by two unidentified drones crashing near the village of Lukowa, prompting Dutch F-35 fighter jets stationed in Poland to take to the skies in response.
On the night of September 4, 2025, two unidentified drones violated Polish airspace and crashed near the village of Lukowa. One drone was presumably involved in attacks on Ukraine. The incident caused no harm to civilians or infrastructure. In response, Dutch F-35 fighter jets stationed in Poland at the Krzesiny base near Poznan were scrambled to patrol and protect the airspace. The Polish military emphasized strengthened security measures and expressed gratitude toward the Dutch pilots. Polish Chief of the General Staff, Wieslaw Kukula, noted that shooting down objects flying into the airspace is usually avoided to prevent civilian harm from debris. Dutch F-35 deployment in Poland began in early September 2025 to support NATO’s eastern flank and Ukraine under the NSATU program. Poland has deployed aircraft regularly during large-scale Russian attacks on Ukraine after previous incursions including a Russian Shahed drone lingering for two and a half hours before crashing in August.
Confidence: High
Classified as aggressor event because of the violation of Polish airspace by unidentified drones, possibly linked to attacks on Ukraine. Classified as defense preparation because Dutch F-35s were deployed in Poland to patrol and secure NATO's eastern flank and Polish airspace as part of the NSATU program.
