A drone crashed into a residential building in Galați, Romania, causing an explosion and fire. Two lightly injured, about 70 evacuated. Drone originated from Russian attacks in Ukraine near Romanian border. Romanian F-16s scrambled and authorized to engage.
On 29 May 2026, a drone crashed into a residential apartment block in Galați, Romania, causing an explosion followed by a fire on the 10th floor. The incident resulted in approximately 70 persons evacuated or self-evacuated and two persons treated at the scene for minor injuries, including a woman with first-degree burns and a 14-year-old boy with a panic attack. Romanian authorities activated RO-ALERT to inform the population. The drone was tracked by radar systems and had crossed into Romanian airspace from Ukraine, where Russian attacks targeted civilian and infrastructure sites near the Romanian border. Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jets, authorized to engage targets, scrambled to intercept the drone and were supported by a Romanian Air Force IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter. Explosive ordnance disposal teams and security services remain on-site conducting investigations. Emergency response included the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU), SMURD, the County Ambulance Service, Police, and specialized teams from the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) and Ministry of Defence (MAPN). The 'Red Plan' emergency response was deactivated after containment. This represents the most severe drone-related incident within Romanian territory since the onset of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Confidence: High
The incident involves a hostile drone crossing international borders, causing damage and civilian injury, linked to ongoing Russian military actions in Ukraine close to the Romanian border, constituting hybrid warfare activity.
