Latvian State Border Guard prevented 109 illegal border crossing attempts from Belarus on Tuesday, continuing an extended border security regime due to increased illegal migration flows.
On Tuesday, 109 attempts of illegal border crossing into Latvia from Belarus were prevented by the State Border Guard. In total, 2889 individuals have been stopped this year from illegally crossing the Latvian border. Due to the increased flow of illegal migrants from Belarus, the Latvian government extended the enhanced border security regime in the Belarus border area until June 30, 2026. The regime covers the Ludza area, Ludza district, Kraslava and district, Augšdaugava district, Daugavpils, and Kaunata parish of Rēzekne district. Last year, the State Border Guard prevented 12,046 attempts of illegal crossing at the Belarus-Latvia border. For humanitarian reasons, 31 illegal migrants were not refused crossing last year. In 2024, 5,388 individuals have been prevented from illegally crossing the Belarus-Latvia border, and 26 were admitted for humanitarian reasons. The article also highlights the situation at the overloaded Mucenieki Refugee Center, which remains stable.
Confidence: High
This signal represents hostile activity induced by the Belarusian side to pressure Latvia through organized and increased illegal migration attempts at the border, consistent with tactics of weaponized migration in hybrid warfare.
