Russian disinformation falsely accuses Baltic states of enabling Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia, spreading among Global South audiences, fueling political destabilization in Latvia, and amplified by pro-Kremlin and Chinese state media across multiple languages and platforms.

Russian state-controlled media and pro-Kremlin actors have propagated a false narrative that the Baltic states (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia) have opened their airspace and even territory to Ukrainian drones attacking Russia, specifically targeting the Saint Petersburg and Leningrad regions. This disinformation campaign began after Ukrainian drones veered into Latvian and Estonian airspace on March 25, 2026, and again on May 7, 2026, with drones crashing into Latvian territory including an oil depot in Rēzekne. Russian media, Telegram channels like Mash and @new_militarycolumnist, and propagandists such as Olga Skabeeva, Vladimir Solovev, Dmitry Kiselov, Dmitry Peskov, Maria Zakharova, Sergey Shoigu, and Nikolay Patrushev amplified these false claims. False reports included a drone hitting a passenger train and civilian apartments in Latvia, with claims of casualties, which were fact-checked and debunked as unrelated incidents miscontextualized by anonymous parody accounts and pro-Kremlin sources. Latvia's political crisis following the drone incidents included the resignation of its Defense Minister and Prime Minister. The pro-Kremlin narrative gained traction mainly outside NATO member states, notably in Latin America, Africa, and the Global South, disseminated via Spanish, Portuguese, and French-language channels. Kremlin propaganda was cross-posted by Chinese state-affiliated media, illustrating coordination in information laundering. Analysis revealed eight language spaces with dominant pro-Kremlin narratives and hostility towards Ukraine and NATO. The misinformation also spread via far-right media and user accounts in Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese, particularly through social media channels like Facebook, Telegram, and YouTube. NATO and Baltic officials strongly refuted the accusations, and Nordic-Baltic Foreign Ministers condemned Russia’s disinformation campaign.
