On May 23, 2026, at about 08:00 local time, a mysterious drone crashed into Lake Drīdzis in the Krāslava region of eastern Latvia, detonating upon water impact with no reported injuries. The State Police received reports from residents and found wreckage suspected to be from the drone. Extensive survey efforts involved additional police drone units, State Fire and Rescue Service with boats, and the National Armed Forces (NBS). NBS sensors did not detect the drone entering Latvian airspace; thus, no mobile broadcast alert was issued. Prime Minister Evika Siliņa requested detailed information from services investigating the incident. Eyewitness Vadims Stepanovs described the drone sounding like a moped, flying over the lake and island before engine shutdown and explosion. The site is about 20 km from the Belarus border and 100 km from the Russia border. Criminal proceedings under Chapter 10 of the Latvian Criminal Law (crimes against the state) were initiated. Residents are urged to avoid the area and report any drone debris. The case remains under investigation with no identified suspects.
