NATO and Sweden are intensifying military preparations on the Baltic island of Gotland, viewed as a critical strategic front line against Russian aggression. Following Sweden's 2024 accession to NATO, a major multinational exercise involving 18,000 troops from 13 countries simulated a potential Russian attack. The island is being rapidly re-militarized with over €200 million invested in infrastructure upgrades, reactivated air defense systems, and armored regiments with CV90 vehicles and Leopard 2 tanks. Swedish officials warn that Russia may attempt covert hybrid attacks including sabotage, drone assaults, radio interference, and espionage. Recent incidents on Gotland include sabotage of a critical water pump, damage to subsea fiber optic cables, and GPS and radio disruptions. The exercise highlighted U.S. troop reductions amid wavering American commitment under former President Trump, though U.S. and NATO personnel stressed strong interoperability and shared defense planning. Ukrainian troops demonstrated advanced drone warfare capabilities, repeatedly forcing exercise restarts by destroying Swedish armored units. Swedish defense leadership emphasizes continuous preparedness and the need for further NATO investment, including permanent long-range air defense deployments on Gotland. Local civilian authorities coordinate weekly multi-agency resilience planning against hybrid and kinetic threats. The island’s strategic location near Russia's Kaliningrad exclave means control of Gotland confers substantial influence over Baltic Sea access, regional airspace, and allied reinforcement routes.
