Lithuanian startup Mainline launched a crowd-source drone detection system to detect Shahed-type drones using Android smartphones of volunteers to analyze acoustic signals and locate drones in real time.
A Lithuanian startup, Mainline, in partnership with activists, launched a crowd-source drone detection system called Drone Rada (Dronuradaras.lt) that utilizes data from volunteers' unused Android smartphones placed at home near windows to detect low-frequency acoustic signatures characteristic of Shahed-type drone engines. The app continuously listens and analyzes ambient sounds, and when a suspicious sound is detected, an embedded algorithm processes the data. Multiple detections by nearby devices enable the system to triangulate and determine the drone's possible location. The project involves 20 specialists and partners, including the Lithuanian Artificial Intelligence Association, Baltic Institute of Technology, and Lithuanian Riflemen's Union members. The organizers aim to recruit 10,000 active users to build the largest civic acoustic drone detection network in the Baltic region, also planning expansion to Poland. Future developments include integrating audio from residents' surveillance cameras and cooperation with Lithuania's major mobile network operators to place sensors on telecommunications towers. The platform consists of a public monitoring map and a dedicated sensor app, with user privacy emphasized as a top priority.
Confidence: High
The signal concerns a defense preparation and civilian technology application to detect hostile drone activity rather than a direct aggressive act. It is a proactive, civilian-involved countermeasure to enhance national security and resilience against drones like Shahed.
