Unauthorized drones detected flying over French military sites near Toulon during a military exercise, triggering anti-drone security measures and a judicial investigation.
Between October 5 and October 16, during a large-scale French armed forces exercise named 'Typhon', unauthorized suspicious drones were spotted flying in the no-fly zone over and near military sites in southeastern France. The French navy confirmed drone intrusions above the naval base of Toulon, the General Directorate of Armaments facility in Toulon, and the 54th Artillery Regiment in Hyères. Anti-drone devices were deployed in coordination with domestic security forces as a response. Despite these incursions, no sensitive infrastructure was reported to be threatened. A judicial investigation into the incidents has been opened. Similar drone incursions have been increasingly observed in other European countries and are sometimes attributed to Russian hybrid warfare tactics.
Confidence: High
Reported unauthorized drone flights in restricted military airspace during a security exercise, consistent with hybrid warfare reconnaissance or surveillance operations. The incidents triggered active defense responses and a judicial investigation. Attribution to Russian hybrid tactics is suggested by contextual information.
