Lithuania and Estonia were denied EU funding for a joint 'drone wall' project aimed at protecting their borders through drone detection and neutralization capabilities.
The Lithuanian Interior Ministry announced that Lithuania and Estonia's joint application for EU funding to develop a 'drone wall' along their border was rejected in early March. Estonia was the main applicant, Lithuania the partner. The project aimed to use drones for border monitoring and deploy anti-drone systems, facilitating information exchange and drone neutralization. The estimated project cost was 12 million euros. Lithuanian officials, including VSAT commander Rustamas Liubajevas and Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovič, stated that alternative funding sources would be sought and that the project is not dead. The EU currently allocates funds for related drone and anti-drone equipment purchases, with Lithuania receiving 11 million euros in total, including 3 million for anti-drone systems. Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas emphasized that state funds would be used to complete the project despite differing EU priorities.
Confidence: High
The event concerns a defensive border security project using drones and anti-drone systems, with no indication of hostile aggressor action. The denial of EU funding prompts defense preparation measures and alternative funding pursuit.
