The Swedish Armed Forces achieved a significant milestone on May 3, 2026, by launching their first operational military reconnaissance satellite into low Earth orbit at 09:00 local Swedish time (07:00 UTC). The satellite, built by Planet Labs, carries high-resolution imaging capabilities and was launched via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Base in California, where Swedish military officials, including Flotilla Admiral Anders Sundeman, were present. This development advances Sweden’s military space program well ahead of the previously set 2030 target, supported by close collaboration with the FMV procurement agency and scientific contributions from FOI. The satellite expands Sweden’s national capability to detect and analyze threats globally, including in hard-to-monitor areas such as the Arctic, bolstering both Sweden’s and NATO’s operational situational awareness. A Space Operations Center is also being established by the Swedish Air Force to oversee satellite operations and produce a comprehensive space domain picture. The new capabilities mark a strategic enhancement of Sweden’s defense posture and alliance contributions in space surveillance and reconnaissance.
