In response to explicit threats and provocations by Huthi militias targeting undersea internet cables in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, vital for global communications, G7 countries convened to emphasize the urgent need to protect these critical infrastructures. The Huthis displayed a map highlighting cables connecting Asia and Europe passing through the strategic Red Sea chokepoint and warned of control over these cables. Especially notable is an incident where the Huthis attacked the cargo ship Rubymar laden with ammonium nitrate in the Red Sea on February 18, 2024; the damaged vessel's anchor is believed to have severed an undersea cable causing global telecommunication disruptions. German Digital and Transport Minister Volker Wissing stressed the vulnerabilities evidenced by these attacks and underlined the necessity of enhanced digital infrastructure security. Industry voices call for increased redundancy in cable networks to ensure survivability of global data flow. Additionally, concerns extend to damage to submarine cables in the Baltic Sea, prompting NATO and European vigilance. The G7 meetings in Verona seek comprehensive strategies to counter the destabilizing geopolitical environment impacting digital infrastructure security.
