Estonian Ministry of Defense opposes bill allowing allied citizens to join Defense League as ordinary members, citing security and control concerns.
The Ministry of Defense of Estonia does not support a bill that would allow allied or partner country citizens to participate in Estonia's national defense as ordinary members of defense league units. The bill, backed by 35 members of the Riigikogu and presented in June, was intended to strengthen defense by allowing allied citizens to join the Defense League on the same basis as Estonian citizens. However, the ministry argues that instead of admitting allied citizens as ordinary members, an open system allowing participation for over 18s who have taken the military oath should be created. The ministry emphasizes that it supports cooperation and cooperation measures within allied countries but opposes granting ordinary member rights in the Defense League to non-citizens. It cites concerns about potential legal, control, and security issues. The ministry also stresses that any defense cooperation must meet higher standards of training and control and that the existing structure meets current security requirements. The bill was expected to be debated further in the Estonian parliament.
Confidence: High
The article discusses a legislative and defense policy decision related to the structure and membership of Estonia's Defense League and national security considerations. It does not describe hostile actions or incidents but rather internal policy debate on defense readiness and legislative control.
