On August 15, 2024, elderly residents in communities in southeast Finland reported failures in electronic safety systems including positioning and cellular coverage, attributed to GPS interference. This event may represent the first confirmed instance of a GPS time-jamming attack, a grave form of cyber disruption affecting critical societal infrastructures reliant on precise GPS timing such as banking, transportation, power grids, and communication networks. The interference poses significant risks by disrupting exact timing essential for these systems' operations. The claims are supported by multiple Twitter sources and linked news articles but remain under observation. This incident highlights a new escalation vector in cyber and information warfare targeting critical civilian infrastructure in Finland.
