Russian fishing trawlers exhibited suspicious loitering near critical undersea communication cables in the North Atlantic, potentially surveying for future sabotage, as warned by NATO officials and naval experts.
An investigation by The Telegraph revealed over 500 suspicious movements of Russian fishing trawlers near critical undersea communication cables connecting Britain with Europe and the US. Analysis of 4.5 years of vessel-tracking data identified 17 Russian fishing vessels repeatedly operating at low speeds near important telecommunications cables in the North Atlantic, spending hundreds of hours close to cables such as Atlantic Crossing 1 north of Scotland. Naval experts suggest these trawlers may be mapping seabed cables using sonar and underwater vehicles to identify vulnerable cable sections for potential sabotage. Royal Navy Chief warned Russia is increasing probes of undersea infrastructure. The fishing vessels may be operating under cover of commercial fishing, as some have never caught fish. Russian specialized deep-sea forces have also been involved, rehearsing cable-severing weapon use near Svalbard. While no cables have been damaged, this activity raises concerns about future sabotage threats to critical NATO communication and energy infrastructure.
Confidence: High
The suspicious, repeated movements of Russian fishing vessels near critical undersea cables, combined with expert assessments and NATO warnings about potential sabotage preparations, constitute a clear hybrid warfare signal indicating covert hostile reconnaissance activities.
