On 2 September 2026, the State Border Guard of Latvia prevented 45 attempts by migrants to illegally cross the Latvia-Belarus border, according to information from the State Border Guard via LETA agency. In total, 10,481 people have been deterred from illegal border crossing so far this year. The Latvian government has extended the strengthened border control regime at the Belarus border until the end of 2026, due to the increased flow of illegal migrants orchestrated by Belarus. This regime covers areas including Ludza and Ludza region parishes, Krāslava and Krāslava region parishes, Augšdaugava region, Daugavpils, and the Kaunata parish in Rēzekne region. In 2025, 12,046 people’s attempts to illegally cross the Belarus-Latvia border were prevented. For humanitarian reasons, 31 illegal migrants were allowed to cross in 2025. In 2024, 5,388 illegal crossings were prevented, with 26 persons admitted due to humanitarian considerations.
Confidence: High
The illegal migrant flow along the Belarus-Latvia border is a known hybrid tactic employed by Belarus to pressure Latvia. The government response to extend border control underscores the ongoing hostile pressure strategy.
