On May 17, 2026, Estonian police discovered a large meteorological balloon carrying contraband Belarusian cigarettes in Tartu County, near Lake Peipus. The balloon was tracked from the village of Kobratu around 4:30 p.m., traveled over the village of Nõva, and then landed. The contraband comprised two boxes wrapped in black film with Belarusian excise stickers, later handed over to the Customs and Tax Administration. This reflects ongoing contraband flow from Belarus to Europe using balloons launched based on favorable wind directions.
