A technical fault at the Espoo electricity station near Helsinki caused the Estonia-Finland Estlink 1 electricity cable to go offline on March 9, 2024, but the link was subsequently restored.
On March 9, 2024, a technical fault at an electricity station in Espoo near Helsinki led to one of the two undersea Estlink electricity cables connecting Estonia and Finland going offline. The Estlink 1 power cable, a 350MW direct connection operational since 2006, was affected by this fault resulting in temporary disruption. The issue was resolved and the link was restored on the same day. This incident highlights the vulnerability of critical electricity infrastructure linking Estonia and Finland. The Estlink 1 cable serves as an important energy supply route across the Gulf of Finland. The cable outage may have contributed to supply concerns, but no deliberate sabotage or hostile action was reported. Further repairs are underway for other related Estlink infrastructure, including Estlink 2.
Confidence: High
The event describes a technical fault causing a temporary outage of the Estlink 1 electricity cable linking Estonia and Finland. There is no evidence or claim of hostile or aggressive actions, sabotage, or cyberattack. The event purely reports an infrastructure technical issue with restoration. Thus, it is not classified as aggressor activity nor as defense preparation.
