Latvian Border Guard stopped 78 illegal migrant crossing attempts at Belarus-Latvia border on Wednesday amid ongoing increased migration flow from Belarus.
On Wednesday, Latvian Border Guard prevented 78 attempts of illegal border crossing at the Latvia-Belarus border. This continued high number of migrant attempts is part of an ongoing increased illegal migration flow attributed to Belarus. So far this year, 10,559 people were stopped from illegal border crossing. The government extended the enhanced border control regime in border areas of Ludza, Kraslava, Augšdaugava, Daugavpils, and Rēzekne until the end of the year. In 2023, 5,388 people were stopped at the Belarus-Latvia border, with 26 people admitted on humanitarian grounds. In 2022, total attempts prevented were 12,046, with 31 people admitted due to humanitarian concerns.
Confidence: High
The persistent and state-coordinated attempts to push migrants illegally across the Latvia-Belarus border, attributed to Belarus's creation of increased illegal migration flows, indicate a deliberate hybrid warfare tactic involving weaponized migration to pressure Latvia.
