Concerns Rise Over Chinese Vehicles as Potential Spy Tools in Germany

German federal security authorities, including the Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz (BfV) and ZITiS, have conducted confidential investigations into vehicles from several Chinese manufacturers amid rising concerns that these cars may function as espionage tools. With modern vehicles equipped with sensors, cameras, and microphones connected to the internet, there is fear they might collect sensitive data, especially if parked near military bases, ministries, or critical infrastructure. Although results of these technical analyses remain classified, restricted parking and access rules have been implemented at high-security sites like the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND) and Operatives Einsatzführungskommando. Other European nations such as the UK and Poland have already imposed bans or restrictions on Chinese vehicles in sensitive areas. Experts warn of the 'enormous potential' for data collection and call for protective measures for military and critical infrastructure in the EU. The report coincides with Chancellor Friedrich Merz's visit to China, highlighting tensions created by China's growing influence in the European electric vehicle market.
