Baltic region airlines experience increasing GPS signal jamming incidents, attributed to Russia near Kaliningrad, disrupting navigation since 2022 war start.
Since the start of the Ukraine war in 2022, airlines flying over the Baltic region have reported increasing GPS signal jamming incidents, likely caused by Russian interference, particularly around the Kaliningrad exclave. The GPS outages have risen from 1,371 incidents recorded in 2023 to 985 incidents in just the first two months of 2024, nearly seven times more than the same period in 2023. The interference causes missing or fake GPS signals affecting navigation systems of commercial and military aircraft, including flights by Finnair, airBaltic, and a British Defense Secretary's military plane. Experts argue the jamming is deliberate, related to the NATO expansion and deployment of U.S. Aegis missile defense systems near Poland. While the EU Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) monitors these events and reports no immediate flight safety risk, the problem could escalate into more serious navigation disruptions. Similar GPS jamming and spoofing also occurs near other conflict zones such as Israel-Lebanon. The interference affects airline operations and passenger information systems and represents a hybrid warfare tactic targeting civil and military aviation sovereignty.
Confidence: High
The repeated, targeted GPS jamming incidents affect civil and military aviation in a key NATO area, consistent with hostile hybrid warfare tactics known to degrade navigation and sovereignty, supported by multiple authoritative sources and expert attribution to Russia.
