The German article reports on a profiling event held in Vienna wherein the head of the Austrian military intelligence service (Abwehramt), Generalmajor Reinhard Ruckenstuhl, and Sylvia Mayer, head of the Directorate for State Protection and Intelligence (DSN), discussed the high presence of spies in Austria, especially in Vienna. Ruckenstuhl estimated that 25-30% of all legal residents with permits from countries like Russia might have intelligence ties. The event highlighted Austria's role as a hub for international espionage due to the presence of many international organizations. Intelligence agents often disguise themselves as scientists or journalists. The article included warnings about recognizing and countering espionage, citing recent Russian influence attempts within Austrian institutions as well as the recent conviction in May of a former state protector for espionage. It stressed a heightened vigilance amidst ongoing hybrid warfare threats from Russia and China. The roles of disinformation, sabotage, recruitment attempts, and the need for individual awareness were discussed. The article also referenced a personal example of an attempted recruitment of an Austrian journalist following a discussion with former spies.
