Numerous US diplomats and their families have suffered from unexplained health issues known as the 'Havana Syndrome', characterized by dizziness, vision problems, and headaches, with the first known cases in 2016 in Havana, Cuba. Investigations by 'The Insider', CBS, and 'Spiegel' indicate that the Russian military intelligence service GRU, specifically special unit 29.155, might have employed energy weapons to target diplomatic and intelligence personnel. The research traces potential involvement to incidents dating back to 2014 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, where a US consulate employee experienced symptoms resembling exposure to a strong energy beam. Russia denies these allegations, calling them baseless. While US intelligence reports had earlier found it 'highly unlikely' that a foreign state was responsible, the investigative journalists compiled evidence from victims, experts, and internal documents pointing to Russian espionage activities. Officially, the US government reports about 1,500 potential cases with only roughly 150 attributable to the syndrome, compensating affected individuals under the 'Havana Act'. The implicated GRU unit is also linked to attacks abroad, including the attempted poisoning of ex-double agent Sergei Skripal in 2018 in the UK.
