Ilona W., a dual German-Ukrainian citizen, was arrested in Berlin for spying for Russia by passing war-related intelligence. Two others supporting eastern Ukraine separatist republics were also detained.
A dual German-Ukrainian citizen, Ilona W., was arrested in Berlin on suspicion of spying for Russian intelligence. She allegedly collected and passed information related to the war in Ukraine, including background on high-level political event participants, arms industry locations, drone tests, and planned drone deliveries. She was in contact with a representative of Russian intelligence at the Russian Embassy in Berlin since November 2023 and used personal contacts with former German Federal Ministry of Defense employees. Searches were conducted at residences of two other suspects in Brandenburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Munich, who remain at large. Additionally, two suspects, Suren A. (Russian citizen) and Falko H. (German citizen), were arrested in Brandenburg for supporting the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, considered foreign terrorist organizations by Germany, through leadership roles in an organization that sent humanitarian aid and drones to those territories.
Confidence: High
The incident involves proven espionage activity conducted on behalf of Russian intelligence targeting sensitive information relevant to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, conducted within German territory, posing a hostile intelligence threat.
