In summer 2024, the Russian military intelligence agency GRU allegedly smuggled drone parts and SIM cards through Lithuania and Poland to Düsseldorf, Germany, possibly for planning explosive drone attacks linked to sabotage incidents involving incendiary packages in Europe.
According to a report by the Polish newspaper Wyborcza, commissioned by reliable sources, the Russian military intelligence service GRU ordered the covert transport of drone parts and multiple SIM cards through Lithuania and Poland to Düsseldorf in summer 2024. A Ukrainian courier living in Poland was allegedly tasked to retrieve concealed drone components from Kaunas, Lithuania, and deliver them to North Rhine-Westphalia despite a car breakdown during the operation. Polish authorities fear these drones were intended for planned explosive attacks, supported by evidence of incendiary devices found in air cargo packages earlier that summer, including an incident at a DHL logistics center in Leipzig. The suspect courier, connected to the DHL case, reportedly transported incendiary-laden air freight which resulted in fires. German authorities, including the BKA, have been informed and have conducted investigations linking the drone parts shipments to drone sabotage threats during a period coinciding with the UEFA European Football Championship held in Germany and neighboring countries. The courier denies all allegations and claims no involvement with foreign intelligence services. Polish authorities discovered explosives cached in Lithuania in corn cans, with holders compatible with drone attachments and SIM cards, which can be used to control drones. The explosive capacity of a single can is estimated around 1.4 kg TNT equivalent, enough to cause serious damage to a vehicle. The manifest background and full scope remain under investigation by law enforcement agencies in Poland, Germany, and Lithuania.
Confidence: High
The article clearly attributes hostile covert operations, including smuggling drone parts and potential explosive devices, to the Russian military intelligence GRU targeted at Germany and neighboring countries. The involvement of incendiary attacks on DHL logistics centers confirms aggressor threats. There is no mention of allied defensive or preparatory measures described in the source.
