Since fall 2023, Russian drones have been violating NATO airspace over several EU countries, including an exhibition of captured drones displayed at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in November 2023.
Beginning in fall 2023, Russia conducted a surge of drone incursions violating NATO airspace, probing countries including Poland, Romania, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and the Netherlands. These drones, which circled airports and military sites, caused real safety and economic risks though no major damage. In November 2023, two captured Russian drones, Shahed and Geran, were brought to the Netherlands and publicly displayed at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. The displays were attended by Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel and State Secretaries Aukje de Vries and Eugène Heijnen, drawing hundreds of officials and defense industry representatives. The exhibits revealed Western components inside the drones, highlighting Russia's use of Western and Chinese parts to circumvent sanctions. The Dutch Defense Ministry encouraged companies to develop drone detection and neutralization technologies amid growing concerns about these hybrid threats. The events and exhibits notably increased European awareness of Russia's ongoing hybrid warfare tactics and intensified calls for accelerated aid to Ukraine and stronger sanctions against Russia.
Confidence: High
The event clearly details Russian hostile actions in violating NATO airspace with drones, constituting aggressor activity. Concurrently, defensive responses including public display of captured drones to raise awareness and calls for drone countermeasures by the Dutch Defense Ministry indicate defense preparation, justifying dual classification.
