Cyberattack causes refrigeration failures at dozens of Delhaize supermarkets in Belgium, also affecting Carrefour Belgium and Sweden’s ICA stores, amid a broader wave of attacks on European supermarket cooling and Ahold Delhaize IT systems.
A coordinated cyberattack disrupted refrigeration systems at supermarket chains in Belgium and Sweden, primarily targeting Delhaize stores in Belgium. According to Belgian media cited by NL Times, freezers and refrigerators at at least 40 Delhaize supermarkets in Belgium were affected. Delhaize described the incident only as an "IT incident" impacting some of its refrigeration systems. The attack appears to have targeted multiple cooling systems linked to Delhaize's Belgian operations late Sunday night or early Monday morning, causing sudden, sharp increases in temperature.
Butcher shop De Laet & Van Haver, which relies on similar cooling infrastructure, also reported that its system temperatures rose sharply. Carrefour Belgium reported that fifteen of its stores had been affected by Monday morning. Swedish media reported a possible related cyberattack on refrigerators and freezers at several branches of the ICA supermarket chain, with ICA cooling systems allegedly reaching temperatures of 50 degrees Celsius overnight.
The pattern resembles a large-scale cyberattack on refrigeration systems in French supermarkets the previous month, which affected hundreds of retail locations and caused cooling systems to heat up overnight. While Ahold Delhaize-branded stores were not impacted by that earlier French incident, the parent company has recently faced its own major cyber disruptions.
A separate cyberattack the previous month forced Ahold to shut down a wide range of IT systems, disrupting supply chain, distribution, and retail operations at Albert Heijn, Etos, Gall & Gall, and other brands, including some in the United States. That earlier attack left store shelves bare or minimally stocked and halted logistics centers and home deliveries. Ahold had to disable websites and apps for many chains for several days, with operations only returning to normal in the week before the refrigeration incident.
Delhaize operates hundreds of locations in Belgium, including about 130 Delhaize-branded supermarkets, over 200 AD Delhaize supermarkets, and several hundred Shop & Go and Proxy Delhaize convenience stores. The new refrigeration-focused cyberattack suggests sustained targeting of food retail infrastructure across multiple European countries over at least a two‑month period.
Confidence: High
The core of the report is malicious cyber activity disrupting refrigeration systems and previously core IT infrastructure at large food retailers, directly fitting the Cyber & Information Warfare / Cyber Attacks category against critical infrastructure. The impact is operational (spoiled goods, disrupted logistics) rather than mere probing, and there is an observable pattern of similar attacks across France, Belgium, and Sweden. No defensive exercise or procurement focus is present, so this i...
