German intelligence warns of increasing Russian espionage and sabotage activities in Germany, including a recent sabotage attempt at a DHL logistics center.
On October 14, 2024, German intelligence agencies publicly warned of a significant increase in Russian espionage and sabotage operations within Germany. Thomas Haldenwang, president of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), highlighted intensified qualitative and quantitative Russian intelligence activities, including a sabotage incident involving a fire in a DHL logistics center in Leipzig in July, which narrowly avoided causing a plane crash. The Federal Intelligence Service (BND) and Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD) report an unprecedented level of Russian attempts to infiltrate and sabotage critical infrastructure, including efforts to target the German military and disrupt weapon supplies to Ukraine. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser confirmed the increased threat and announced strengthened countermeasures, such as stationing the GSG 9 special police unit on the Baltic coast and enhancing cybersecurity powers. Intelligence leaders also stressed the need for expanded legal competencies to effectively combat these threats.
Confidence: High
This event is classified as aggressor activity because it involves documented increasing hostile Russian intelligence operations targeting Germany, including sabotage and espionage attempts. It is also a defense preparation event since German authorities report intensified countermeasures such as deploying special police units and enhanced cybersecurity measures.
