Lithuanian authorities reject Russian FSB claims of a Lithuanian-based saboteur killed in Russia as disinformation amid ongoing military exercises.
On May 3, 2024, the Russian FSB announced it killed a purported Ukrainian saboteur who allegedly traveled from Lithuania to Russia's Moscow and Leningrad regions to conduct sabotage and terror attacks on military and infrastructure facilities. The FSB cited evidence including weapons, explosives, a Lithuanian bank-issued payment card, telephone communications with a handler, and training in Pabradė, Lithuania. Lithuania's National Crisis Management Centre head, Vilmantas Vitkauskas, strongly dismissed these allegations as disinformation aimed at undermining Lithuanian support for Ukraine and increasing tensions during Lithuania's hosting of the Thunder Storm military exercises. Lithuanian authorities warned that further Russian disinformation attacks might be expected and urged vigilance. A week prior, the FSB reported arresting another purported Ukrainian saboteur allegedly coming from Lithuania. Lithuania maintains the claims are part of Russia's long history of disinformation and provocations to cover its own aggressive actions.
Confidence: High
The event clearly describes aggressive Russian disinformation activity via the FSB targeting Lithuania and Ukraine by alleging sabotage plots involving Lithuania as a base, indicating hostile hybrid warfare tactics. Simultaneously, Lithuanian authorities' warnings and references to ongoing military exercises constitute defense preparations in response to these threats, justifying both aggressor and defense preparation classifications with high confidence due to explicit attribution and detail...
