On February 10, 2026, Greek authorities detained a 55-year-old man in Thessaloniki suspected of participating in a Russia-linked plot to assassinate two individuals in Lithuania: a Russian political asylum activist and a Lithuanian political adviser known for anti-Russian statements. The plot included surveillance activities such as photographing, filming, and tracking the targets, with a tracking device found on the Lithuanian adviser's vehicle and possible electronic infiltration of the Russian activist's devices. Several suspects from multiple countries including Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, and Greece were named, with 5,000 euros already transferred as initial payment and promises of 40,000-50,000 euros to perpetrators. Greek courts approved extradition, but the suspect denies all accusations and plans to appeal. Investigations continue across Europe, potentially involving suspects in Germany.
