Sweden begins refit of HMS Orion for experimental naval capability development focused on underwater infrastructure surveillance, with service planned for early 2028.
The Swedish Navy's former signal intelligence ship HMS Orion, decommissioned in late 2023 after 39 years' service and replaced by HMS Artemis, is being rebuilt to act as a platform for experiment-driven capability enhancement within the Navy. The refit will enable it to focus on monitoring critical underwater infrastructure and develop redundancy in sea-based signal reconnaissance. HMS Orion is currently at dock undergoing a major overhaul to restore seaworthiness, followed by modifications tailored to its new mission. The crew, including retired officers, reservists, civilian experts, GSS personnel, and conscripts, is being assembled to ensure experienced staffing without impacting operational readiness of active units. The ship's future unit assignment is yet to be decided, with re-entry into active service targeted for early 2028. The initiative aims to foster naval innovation effectively while preserving other naval platforms for their primary operations.
Confidence: High
The article details a Swedish Navy initiative to rebuild and repurpose HMS Orion as an experimental platform for capability development and surveillance enhancement, clearly indicating alliance defense preparations rather than aggressor activity.
