On the night of Saturday, May 2, 2026, a Russian drone briefly penetrated Romanian national airspace near Chilia, in the Tulcea county northern area. This occurred amid renewed Russian attacks on civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine close to the Romanian border. Twenty Russian drones were detected by Romanian Ministry of National Defense (MApN) radars heading toward Ismail, Ukraine. Romanian Air Force scrambled two F-16 fighter jets from the 86th Air Base at Fetești around 02:00. At 02:03, the National Military Command Center notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations to issue a RO-Alert message to the local population. The drone crossed briefly into Romanian airspace near Chilia and continued toward Ismail. Numerous explosions were reported on the Ukrainian side of the Danube. The air alert ended at 02:50. MApN keeps allied structures informed in real-time and maintains permanent contact.
Confidence: High
The drone intrusion into Romanian sovereign airspace by Russian unmanned aerial vehicle amid ongoing Russian attacks against Ukraine constitutes hostile military activity violating Romanian airspace, confirmed by Romanian military response with fighter jets and population alert, indicating aggressive intent.
