Ukrainian nationals conducted firebombing attacks in Lithuania and Poland on Russian intelligence orders, targeting commercial sites for sabotage.
An 18-year-old Ukrainian national, Daniil Bardadim, was sentenced by a Lithuanian court to 3 years and 4 months imprisonment for setting fire to an IKEA store in Vilnius on May 8, 2024, under orders from Russian intelligence. Bardadim and an accomplice, both Ukrainian nationals, were promised €10,000 and a BMW 530 to conduct sabotage attacks in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland but never received the payment. On the night of May 8, Bardadim planted an explosive device with a timer inside the Vilnius IKEA store, causing an explosion and fire. Subsequently, Bardadim briefly traveled to Warsaw and then returned to Vilnius to retrieve bags containing explosives and detonators intended for additional attacks. He was detained on May 13 while traveling to Riga, and the accomplice was arrested in Poland after setting fire to a major shopping center. This incident reveals a Russian intelligence-directed terrorism and sabotage campaign targeting Baltic and nearby countries.
Confidence: Medium
The incident involves deliberate sabotage and use of explosives ordered by a hostile foreign intelligence entity, indicating hybrid aggression within the military and paramilitary domain.
