Two 17-year-old Dutch teenagers were arrested on suspicion of espionage with links to Russian spying after allegedly engaging with pro-Russian hackers and carrying a wifi-sniffing device near key intelligence offices in The Hague.
Two 17-year-old boys in the Netherlands have been arrested on suspicion of 'state interference' linked to Russian espionage. They were reportedly contacted by pro-Russian hackers on Telegram. One boy was seen carrying a 'wifi sniffer' device near Europol, Eurojust, and the Canadian embassy in The Hague. One was remanded in custody and the other placed on strict home bail ahead of a hearing within two weeks. The National Office of the Netherlands Public Prosecution Service confirmed the court appearance but withheld details citing the suspects' age and ongoing investigation. One suspect’s father said police arrested his son during homework time and linked the case to espionage and services to a foreign country. The teenager was described as computer savvy with an interest in hacking and held a part-time supermarket job. The Dutch domestic intelligence agency declined to comment.
Confidence: High
The arrest of teenagers linked to espionage with direct contact from pro-Russian hackers and the use of espionage technology near key intelligence buildings indicates hostile foreign intelligence operations and active hybrid aggression.
