Ukraine and Russia conducted a renewed prisoner exchange on 5 February 2026, returning 157 Ukrainians—including many defenders of Mariupol and several illegally convicted civilians—from Russian captivity after a long pause in swaps.
On 5 February 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced via his official Telegram channel that Ukraine and Russia conducted a new prisoner exchange after a prolonged pause, resulting in the return of 157 Ukrainian citizens from Russian captivity. Of those released, 150 are military personnel and 7 are civilians. The freed service members include soldiers, sergeants, and officers from the Navy Forces, Ground Forces, Territorial Defense Forces, Airborne Assault Troops, Air Force, National Guard, and State Border Service. Many had defended Ukrainian positions in Luhansk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Sumy, and Kyiv regions, with more than half captured during the defense of Mariupol. Zelensky emphasized that most of the returnees had been held since 2022 and that the exchange also included Ukrainians who had been illegally convicted in Russian courts, such as a 23‑year‑old defender who was captured at 19 in Mariupol and sentenced to life imprisonment. The oldest freed defender is 63. Zelensky stressed that the exchange was achieved thanks to the efforts of Ukrainian negotiators and the creation of an "exchange fund" through battlefield captures, and he pledged continued efforts to secure the release of all Ukrainians held by Russia. Russian channels reported that, on their side, three civilians from Russia’s Kursk region were returned. The exchange forms part of a broader pattern of negotiated swaps, including a previously agreed three‑way deal in Abu Dhabi involving the United States, Ukraine, and Russia to exchange a total of 314 prisoners, and follows the last major Ukraine‑Russia prisoner swap on 2 October 2025, when 185 military and 20 civilian Ukrainians were freed.
Confidence: Low
The event is a humanitarian prisoner exchange rather than a classic population or migration weaponization case. However, within the available taxonomy, the closest fit is under Population & Migration Tools, as it concerns the managed movement and release of individuals held as leverage in an interstate conflict. None of the other categories (cyber, military operations, economic pressure, etc.) clearly captures the negotiated exchange dynamic, so this mapping is approximate. The signal is mark...
