Pro-Russian hacker group Server Killers declared cyberwar on Norway, conducting a large-scale DDoS attack on government digital services starting August 24, 2026, motivated by Norway’s support for Ukraine.
The pro-Russian hacking group Server Killers declared a 'cyberwar' on Norway, claiming responsibility for a large-scale distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack targeting Norway's Digitalisation Directorate (Digdir) infrastructure beginning the night of August 24, 2026, lasting at least three days. The attack affected around ten government digital services including electronic identification systems ID-porten and MinID, the Altinn portal, and digital postal services. Digdir confirmed core systems remain operational with no evidence of breach or personal data leaks. Server Killers said the attack was motivated by Norway's support for Ukraine, referencing a defense and security cooperation agreement between Oslo and Kyiv signed on August 23, 2026, and an intended NOK 85 billion aid budget to Ukraine. Norway’s National Criminal Investigation Service (Kripos) and the Police Security Service (PST) are investigating and monitoring the incident. Server Killers, active since 2023 and linked to the pro-Russian hacking group NoName057(16), previously targeted websites in Denmark, the UK, Romania, and Canada. Independent confirmation of Server Killers' responsibility is lacking.
Confidence: High
The DDoS attack is a clear hostile cyber operation targeting critical government infrastructure by a known pro-Russian hacking group with stated political motivations linked to Norway’s support for Ukraine, constituting hybrid warfare activity against Norway.
