Estonia's Police and Border Guard Board acquired 20 advanced SUVs worth €2 million, mostly EU-funded, to patrol the improved eastern border with Russia, with some vehicles also aiding Frontex operations.
In June 2025, Estonia's Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) purchased 20 advanced SUVs valued at €2 million to improve patrolling along Estonia's eastern border with Russia. These new vehicles feature advanced onboard technology, are quieter and more compact, and will replace older off-road vehicles. The improved border infrastructure has allowed prioritizing technological capabilities. The PPA staff will undergo training to master the new vehicles. Ninety percent of the funding came from the EU. Some older vehicles will be donated as aid to Ukraine. Additionally, some of these SUVs will support joint operations with the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) along EU external borders and in third countries.
Confidence: High
This event involves the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board upgrading patrol capabilities along the Estonia-Russia border by acquiring technologically advanced vehicles, reflecting defensive preparations to enhance border security. While it does not describe an aggressor action, it is a clear example of alliance defense preparation.
