A Russian drone swarm flew into Poland early Wednesday and faced response from Polish and Dutch fighter jets. Some drones were destroyed by fighters, others crashed independently. Finland would respond similarly using air defense and fighter jets, selecting and prioritizing the most dangerous drones for interception. Detection involves radars and electronic surveillance complemented by airborne sensors. Slow flying drones like the Russian Shahed models (around 180 km/h) are vulnerable at high altitudes to fighters shooting with guns or missiles. At tree-top level, drones are harder to intercept by fighters and require other air defense means such as jamming, anti-aircraft ammunition or helicopter door guns. Finland has layered air defense but lacks effective high-altitude missile interception; it has ordered Israel's David's Sling system for high-altitude missile defense but it does not aid drone interception. Finland faces challenges due to extensive 1300 km land and maritime borders with partially deployed air defense assets and reliance on mobile fighters for flexible response. Cost-effectiveness is a key issue as counter-drone operations using expensive systems are costly, and a complete drone defense 'wall' is considered unrealistic without multinational cooperation. Ukraine claims to intercept 80% of attacking drones, using Western equipment, but effective layered systems, including lasers and electromagnetic weapons, are needed to improve defenses. Finnish military leadership acknowledges a clear air defense gap against drones.
