Russian Intelligence Uses Former Wagner Group Recruiters to Organize Sabotage Operations in Europe

Following the death of Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin, Russian intelligence integrated Wagner recruitment networks into the GRU and shifted their focus from frontline volunteer recruitment to organizing sabotage operations across Europe. These networks target marginalized and economically vulnerable Europeans, recruiting them via encrypted Telegram channels to conduct sabotage acts such as arson on warehouses supplying Ukraine, vandalism of politicians' vehicles, and spreading disinformation. The recruited agents are 'disposable,' untrained, and easily replaceable, enabling Moscow to deny involvement. Western intelligence highlights Wagner's adeptness at adapting propaganda methods, leveraging troll-factory experience to radicalize young Europeans. A prominent example was a 2024 arson attack in London executed by a British citizen recruited through these channels. Although the loss of traditional espionage agents has forced more crude operational methods, many sabotage attempts are detected and stopped. The ultimate Russian goal remains weakening Western support for Ukraine and fostering social instability in European countries.
